Establishment of Mangrove Nursery
One of the milestone of the project is to set up a mangrove nursery along the Kertih River. The nursery is used as an area where seedlings of different mangrove species are grown until they are ready for replanting along the Kertih River. There are two nurseries set-up to date by the volunteers along the Kertih River.
First Mangrove Nursery. Established in April 2006 and consist of mangrove species such as
Bruguiera sp., Xylocarpus sp., Ceriops sp., Nypa sp. , Rhizophora mucronata and Rhizophora apiculata.
This nursery can accommodate approximately 550 mangrove seedlings at any one time.
The second nursery. Established in April 2007and can accommodate about 1400 mangrove seedlings comprising the
Avicennia sp., Rhizophora mucronata, Rhizophora apiculata
and
Ceriops sp
.
